Arco Norte Regional Assembly – Day 1
Recognizing the Journey and Richness of Our Region
The IV Regional Assembly of Arco Norte began on Monday with a spirit of gratitude, reflection, and hope as participants gathered to recognize the journey and richness of the region and begin discerning the path forward together.
The day opened with breakfast and informal time for participants to reconnect before the Assembly officially began with a moment of spirituality led by the Arco Norte Regional Committee. This prayerful start invited everyone to center themselves in the spirit of the gathering and remember that the work of the Assembly is rooted in faith, community, and the shared Marist mission.
A Time to Listen and Discern Together
In welcoming participants, organizers expressed deep appreciation for the effort many made to attend the Assembly, acknowledging the commitments participants had stepped away from in order to be present.
“Many of you have stepped away from your responsibilities, your communities, your ministries, and from your families. This is no small thing, and for that reason your presence here is deeply appreciated.”
Participants were reminded that the Assembly is more than simply a meeting or planning session. Rather, it is an opportunity for the region to gather in a spirit of prayerful discernment.
“We are not gathered simply to analyze or plan, but to listen attentively to the voice of God who continues to guide our Marist life and mission in this part of the world.”
The opening also highlighted the presence of members of the General Administration, including Superior General Br. Peter Carroll, Vicar General Br. Hipólito Pérez, and Link Councilor Br. Marl Omede, whose participation was described as a sign of communion with the wider Marist Institute.
Reflecting on the Journey of the Region
The morning’s first session focused on introductions and orientation to the days ahead. Participants introduced themselves, representing the many provinces, ministries, and communities that make up the Arco Norte region.
Participants were invited to reflect on the history and development of the region and the growth that has taken place across its fourteen countries.
“It has truly been a privilege to witness the richness of Marist life and mission that has flourished across the fourteen countries that make up our region.”
The reflections also acknowledged that the journey of the region has included both moments of challenge and moments of joy.
“Despite the challenges, we have grown. We have grown not only as a region but as a family.”
These reflections helped frame one of the central questions guiding the Assembly:
What is the Spirit calling us to be and to do as Arco Norte today?
Recognizing the Gifts of the Region
Later in the morning, participants turned their attention to the richness of the work already taking place across the region. Regional teams shared insights into their initiatives and ministries, helping participants gain a deeper understanding of how the Marist mission is being lived across Arco Norte.
Time was also given for participants to review reports and engage in conversations with coordinators, creating space for dialogue and shared learning.
Reflecting Together on the Future
In the afternoon, participants gathered for a group activity designed to reflect more deeply on the life and direction of the region. Through conversation and shared reflection, participants explored key questions:
- What have we done well?
- Where do we need to improve?
- What may still be missing?
- What priorities should guide the future?
These conversations emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared responsibility as the region continues to grow and evolve.
Looking Ahead
The final working session of the day included discussions on Arco Norte finances and the development of a regional communication plan, both important elements for strengthening collaboration across provinces.
Participants were also reminded that the region is entering a period of significant change and new opportunities for collaboration.
“These processes reflect a sincere search for deeper communion, new structures, and more effective ways of living and animating our mission in today’s world.”
Walking Together as a Marist Family
The day concluded with a moment of spirituality led by the Province of Canada, offering participants an opportunity for reflection and gratitude after a full day of dialogue and discernment.
As participants gathered later for dinner and conversation, the sense of fraternity and shared purpose that defines the Arco Norte region continued to grow.
The opening message encouraged participants to approach the Assembly with openness and hope:
“Let us open our hearts to the action of the Spirit… and dream together about who we want to become as a region over the next three years.”
Day one of the Assembly reminded participants that Arco Norte is more than a structure—it is a living family of Marists walking together in mission.
